Which opening is connected to the reported leak?
Start with the interior location, then inspect the nearest skylight, vent, pipe, conduit, curb or roof-to-wall transition that could carry water. The visible ceiling stain is a clue, not proof of the opening above it. Water can move through insulation, deck channels or framing before appearing inside. Compare the roof slope and drainage route with each plausible connection, then document the detail that can be verified.
For a skylight, inspect the perimeter flashing, curb corners, cap or glazing interface where accessible, fasteners and adjoining membrane. For a small penetration, examine the boot, collar or flashing shape, attachment and seal at the roof surface. These components are not interchangeable. Identify whether the reported leak concerns roofing around the unit, a failed skylight assembly or a separate pipe or mechanical connection.
If access is limited, record what was seen and what was not tested. The owner can arrange a skylight, plumbing or equipment specialist when the component itself needs evaluation.
